Set in the grounds of a refurbished steading hotel in rural Perthshire, this wild sauna has a boutique, escape-like feel with sweeping views over the Tay Valley. The wider estate is known for its acclaimed cookery school, featured on BBC’s Scotland’s Greatest Escapes, adding to its reputation as a destination for slow, thoughtful experiences. Surrounded by open countryside, it feels both remote and restorative, with a sense of calm that suits its wild yet refined atmosphere.

Our Wild Sauna Visit

A welcome stop on a road trip north in late May, we were looking forward to our visit and a break from the traffic of the A9. The narrow, winding road lined with bluebells set the tone for the scenic rural vibe of this stylish wild sauna. We left feeling holiday-ready, relaxed, refreshed, and rejuvenated.

Guide to Facilities

Parking

It's a slow, narrow road to the farm estate with farm traffic including the occasional sheep so leave plenty time to make the drive. There is a small car park at the top of the drive, outside the farmhouse. Electric vehicle charging is available.

Changing

There is changing space in the porch area of the sauna which has shutters for privacy. A toilet is also available next to the farm shop and reception.

Host

The host introduced us to the facilities and let us start our session once we were ready as we were a little ahead of schedule. She gave us a charming wee box each with towels and cups.

The Hot Bit
This 8 person wild sauna is wood fired with two tiers of bench seating facing the floor to ceiling window. The view looks over the grounds of the farm and the beautiful Tay valley. There are no sauna hats provided but some are available to buy at the farm shop.

The Cold Bit

There is a seating area next to the sauna to enjoy the rural countryside views while you cool off gently. A cold water shower behind the sauna and a luxuriously large tin plunge bath are the other options, which is very in keeping with the farm setting and allows multiple sauna guests to cool off at once.

Food/Drinks Nearby

Fruit and herb infused water is available in the sauna. Deli snacks and drinks can be bought from the farm shop. The estate's sister hotel, the Grandtully (pronounced Grantly) Hotel is a short drive further along the road for meals or nearby Pitlochry has many other dining options.

Good to Know

Towels are provided, while the website booking system is a little over complicated. Ballintaggart farm also hosts cookery classes, yoga sessions and retreats.
