Tucked into the dunes of Hopeman’s East Beach, Fyrhùs Sauna sits just beyond the colourful beach huts, on the beautiful Moray coast. This peaceful little fishing village makes the perfect setting for this secluded wild sauna escape by the sea.

Beachside wooden sauna with black shutters overlooks sandy shore and calm blue sea under a clear sky.

Guide to Facilities

Parking & Directions

Park in the free car park at the end of the single lane road to East Beach. From here it's a few minutes walk along a sandy track to the wild sauna.

Changing

There is a campervan available for changing in, providing some privacy. We each had a large plastic bucket to keep our belongings together, making it easy to move everything into the van if it started to rain. There are also hooks on the outside of the sauna for hanging dry robes, towels, and other items.

Host

Our host greeted us and let us get straight into our session. She kept the stove well stocked and hot throughout, and gave us a 15-minute warning towards the end of our session so we knew when it was time to wrap up.

The Hot Bit

This wood-fired wild sauna seats up to six people on L-shaped benches arranged over two tiers with the stove at the door. Our session was fully booked making the sauna feel cosy and intimate. One person chose to sit on the lower bench, which gave the rest of us a little more space.

The benches are positioned to face the large picture window, so everyone has a clear view of the stunning coastal scenery. Looking out from the warmth of the sauna, we could enjoy uninterrupted views across the sandy beach towards the Moray Firth beyond. It is a lovely contrast between the intense heat of the wood-fired stove and the cool, open landscape outside.

A smaller window at the back of the sauna frames a view of the dunes, giving the space a real connection with its natural surroundings. The glass door lets in plenty of natural light and helps this compact sauna feel bright and airy.

There are several sauna hats available for anyone who wants to use one to help manage the heat. A sand timer is provided for keeping track of your session.

The Cold Bit

There is a cold shower right outside the sauna, which is ideal for a quick, invigorating cool-down between rounds. If you prefer to take things more slowly, there is also a deck chair where you can sit and let your body gradually cool in the fresh coastal air.

For those wanting a more adventurous cold-water experience, the refreshing waters of the Moray Firth are just across the sandy beach. The sand is soft and comfortable underfoot, so there is no need for sand shoes, making it easy to wander down to the water straight from the sauna. Remember to check tide times to see when the water will be furthest up the beach.

We spotted the occasional seal popping its head above the water, adding to the sense of connection with the wild surroundings.

Food/Drinks Nearby

Water and cups are provided at the sauna. As we were leaving Michelle gave us each a slice of orange, a refreshing finish to our session.

If you fancy something more substantial afterwards, there is a small takeaway coffee shop in Hopeman village, along with a local shop where you can pick up drinks, snacks and other essentials.

Good to Know

Fyrhùs has special events, including Sauna, Sing & Supper, with plans to make this a more regular part of their offering.

They also offer member discounts on both communal and private sauna sessions.
