Teth Sauna: Collieston, Aberdeenshire

Teth Sauna can be found on the edge of the quaint fishing village of Collieston, Aberdeenshire, where the sandy dunes of Forvie Nature Reserve meet the rugged cliffs of the North. The natural sheltered bay creates a perfect spot for wild swimming in these otherwise untamed waters. Balancing the invigorating chill of the wild North Sea, Teth, the Gaelic word for hot (pronounced “cheh”), captures the essence of the sauna experience.

Our Wild Sauna Visit

Collieston village holds a nostalgic place for me, having grown up in the area, so I was excited to visit Teth Wild Sauna and, best of all, take a cooling swim in the sea afterwards. I visited first thing on an overcast Sunday morning with a friend, making it the perfect opportunity for an overdue catch-up while enjoying the sauna all to ourselves.

Guide to Facilities

Parking & Directions

The sauna is situated in a large car park at the foot of the cliffs, with plenty of parking available right beside it. For detailed directions, open map link:

Changing

There is currently no dedicated changing space, so bringing a large towel or changing robe is recommended for privacy. A small amount of space is available in the storage container for belongings, although this is limited as the area is mainly used for paddle board equipment.

Host

Our host James was friendly and helpful, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere from the start. He checked in on us and monitored the sauna temperature while giving us plenty of space to enjoy our session. He also kept the water buckets topped up, and his relaxed, positive approach set the tone for the whole experience.

The Hot Bit

This converted horse box sauna seats six on benches facing each other, with the stove positioned at the far end. The glass door looks out across the car park past the cliffs towards the sea, although the host mentioned plans to reposition the sauna in the future to provide clearer views towards the beach and bay.

The Cold Bit

There are buckets of cold water available for a quick, refreshing cool down, along with a watering can for rinsing off. Alternatively, a short walk down the track leads to a sheltered bay with easy access to the sea. Remember to consider tide times when planning your visit, as conditions can vary. During my visit, the tide had brought in some litter, with some plastic floating in the water, which slightly detracted from the otherwise peaceful coastal setting.

Food/Drinks Nearby

There is no water provided but Collieston village is a short walk away with several small cafes. For more options Newburgh, Cruden Bay and Ellon are close by.

Good to Know

There is currently no dedicated booking site, so sessions can be reserved by private message, email, or phone. Teth is part of Forvie Outdoors, where guests can also enjoy other water-based activities including paddleboarding and kayaking.
